RETHYMNO
Rethymno is located on the north west coast in the most mountainous region of Crete. It has a very long sandy beach starting from the old harbour and stretching for several kilometers towards the east.
 

Its most famous attractions are the Venetian fortress, the old port and the old town with its quaint backstreets. A mixture of old and new characterises Rethymnon combining both the historic old town with a dynamic, commercial centre thus making Rethymnon a town of great interest as well as a very modern centre and today it has many visitors from all over Europe. Because of the many mountains in the hinterland the flora and fauna and are very interesting with many natural treasures, such as the sea turtle, caretta- caretta, which lays its eggs along the beaches and in the mountains, the Eleanora falcon makes its nest on the craggy peaks.
 

Dozens of varieties of wild flowers and herbs can be found and the air is sweetened by their fragrance. The hilly interior contains a scattering of villages and farming towns which are home to some of Crete’s most outstanding crafts, including the pottery of Margarites and the textiles of Anogia.
 

There are daily car ferries to and from Athens and Rethymno is approximately one hour away from both Chania and Iraklion which both have international airports and car ferries to Athens.
